The South Bay Volleyball Club (SBVBC) is a project of the Billy DeFrank LGBT Center. We are a nonprofit organization that welcomes gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered, and supportive individuals from the straight community in the San Francisco and San Jose Bay Area ( California ) who are interested in the sport of volleyball. We are committed to helping people achieve their goals in the sport, whether one wants to be weekend recreational player, or a die-hard competitor on a regional or national scale.

The SBVBC evolved from an outdoor league in the late 1970's. The league started at the River Glen Park in the Willow Glen area of San Jose . By the early 1980's, the league was moved indoors for teams to practice for the Gay Games and North American Gay Volleyball Association (NAGVA) tournaments. Interest in the indoor league diminished so the facility was kept for open gym play and the South Bay Volleyball Club was started.

The SBVBC held their first NAGVA tournament in 1986. As the club grew, they needed a larger facility so they moved in 1988 from the Mountain View Sports Center to the Wilson Adult Center (Benton) where the club currently operates an open gym.

After the 1990 Gay Games, members of the club decided to formalize the club and set up a mission statement and bylaws. And in 1993, the club had one of it biggest achievements by hosting NAGVA Nationals. Sixty five teams from across the country came to participate that year.

Today, The South Bay Volleyball Club continues to serve the community in the Bay Area. We hope you will join us and play some volleyball.
